Description
Rare 18th Century Embroidered Altar Frontal. The lot includes a rare 88” x 25” brown silk heavily worked late 18th century European altar frontal featuring masterfully applied metallic and possibly real gold embroidery in a scrolling pattern with flowers and leaves backed in a variety of period brocades, velvets, and chenille thread. There are also several flowers that are completely embroidered and showcase a variety of techniques. We did a rub test and acid tested the gold gimp and flecks held whilst in the 10k acid. It is backed in green silk and is in fair condition with all of the embroidery intact. The silk at the front and back is shattering in several areas, the embroidery however is in good condition.
