Description
19th Century Half Mourning dress c1880. The pairing includes a 19th century matching bodice and skirt. The bodice features a body made of black satin with gathers at the shoulders, puffed sleeves made of mauve cotton with a polka dot net lace overlay, and a modesty panel. As well as many black glass bead applique accents on the bust, sleeves, and waist with a large beaded wreath on the upper back. There is also soutache embroidery along the slight peplum waistline. As well as no lining and no stays in the bodice, there are currently snap closures that were added at a later date but originally it would have had hook and eye closures. The skirt is made of black cotton and features 2 ruffled flounces (1 black cotton, 1 mauve with net overlay) and a mauve band with a rosette and tails. The skirt is unlined and has a wool brain supporting the second heavier flounce. Laying flat the pairing measures: Bodice: bust 20”, waist 16”, sleeve 21”, skirt: waist 16”, length 42”. The pairing is in fair condition with the satin portions of the bodice shattering at the underarms, fading, light bead loss. The skirt is in good condition with only minor fading along the hem line.
