September Antique & Vintage Quilts, Feedsacks, & Textiles Auction
Lot 2:
Description
Antique c1860 Tulip Basket Applique Quilt worked in red and blue (previously green) on white. It measures 73 by 86 inches. It is comprised of 12 applique blocks, about 16 by 16 inches, set on point, 4 across by 3 down, with white solid setting squares and triangles, and an approximately 10 inch applique border on all four sides worked as a meandering vine with tulips, buds, six point flowers, and small blue baskets at the turns. Each block carries a solid blue basket with a red and blue tulip and two side buds rising from it on slender blue stems. It is hand appliqued and hand quilted. The quilting is dense and covers the entire ground, with feathered plumes and wreaths worked into the white areas, diagonal crosshatch through the baskets, and close background filler between the motifs. There is thin cotton batting and a white cotton reverse. The edge is finished with an applied blue binding. A later hand lettered cotton label is stitched to the reverse reading Tulip Baskets c1850. The blue fabric was probably originally a double process green and has lost the yellow dye, revealing blue.
