Description
Antique 1856 Signed Friendship Quilt Top from Monmouth County, NJ, worked in red and green applique with broderie perse chintz blocks. It measures 89 by 89 inches. It is comprised of 36 blocks, about 12 by 12 inches, set straight, 6 by 6, with 2 inch red print sashing and a matching red print border on all four sides. The blocks alternate between red and green calico applique in papercut, oak leaf and reel, princess feather, tulip, and rose wreath designs, and broderie perse blocks with roses, peonies, cabbage roses, and morning glories cut from English roller printed chintz and hand appliqued. The fabrics include Turkey red prints, madder fancy prints in red with yellow and blue figures, chrome orange, and green calicos including an overdyed green with a yellow figure. It is hand appliqued, with hand inked and stamped name inscriptions of signatures. Several names are inscribed across the top, some with commercially printed name stamps in decorative floral cartouches and some hand inked in script with penwork flourishes. They include: Aaron H. Burtis 1856, Mary W. Burtis 1856, Catharine Burtis, John Burtis, Eleanor H. Burtis, Vashti Burtis, Lydia H. Shinn, Mary Barcalow, and Daniel Barcalow.
Condition report:
It is in fair condition with overall toning, scattered foxing spots throughout, and a large brown stain across one lower block where the fabric has torn with some loss. In house Flat Rate Shipping of $30 is a domestic shipping estimate for first quilt and includes insurance. We will gladly combine multiple quilts for your convenience and economy.
