Description
Panama (Guna Yala), circa 1970s

Richly detailed reverse appliqué mola panel depicting a complex narrative scene set within a pentagonal house or temple form. Two winged angel figures with appliquéd white faces and flowing hair flank the upper corners, while the central composition features multiple winged spirit figures in orange, pink, and blue surrounding a large coiled green serpent grasping a creature. Four-pointed star motifs fill the interstices. Executed in three layers of maroon, black, and orange cotton with extensive appliqué in polychrome cotton and elaborate hand embroidery detailing throughout in blue, green, yellow, and pink thread. Concentric banded border in red, orange, and yellow with zigzag edging and multicolored rectangular fill work along the sides.
