Description

Panama (Guna Yala), circa 1950s
13.25 x 16.25 inches (each panel)
Matched pair of reverse appliqué and appliqué mola panels depicting a symmetrical botanical composition with a central branching plant form and radiating fronds, leaves, and curvilinear tendrils, executed in three layers of red and orange cotton. The tonal red-on-red palette with orange channeling is characteristic of earlier traditional work, revealing the design solely through the subtle contrast of the cut layers. The fully filled composition features bilateral symmetry with dense, intricate cutwork throughout, including small teardrop and comma-shaped interior cuts within the leaf forms. Fine, even hand-stitching with controlled curves. Floral calico print binding along the upper edges.
Provenance: From the Parker & Neal Collection.
