Description
Panama (Guna Yala), circa 1970s

Boldly composed reverse appliqué mola panel depicting a Guna interpretation of the Christian Nativity, inscribed “ADORACION” in polychrome appliquéd letters across the upper register, executed in two layers of black and yellow-green cotton with extensive appliqué and hand embroidery throughout. A yellow-green outlined stable encloses the central scene featuring two animals facing one another, their bodies densely filled with zigzag embroidery in multiple colors. Above the animals, a radial star of Bethlehem occupies the center, flanked by a smaller star. A stylized Christmas tree with herringbone embroidery stands at left. The surrounding field is filled with bottles and additional star motifs, while polychrome linear stitching enlivens the background throughout.
