Description
Panama (Guna Yala), circa 1970s

Boldly composed reverse appliqué mola panel depicting two winged angels flanking a central cross adorned with bells, executed in two layers of red and orange cotton with extensive appliqué and hand embroidery throughout. Each angel is rendered with layered curling hair, outstretched striped wings, and an open mouth, holding a round object. The vertical cross is decorated with a column of bells in varied colors, with a green six-pointed star at the intersection. Eight five-pointed stars with concentric centers anchor the corners of the composition, while stylized leaves fill the lower register. The background is enlivened with polychrome linear fill stitching in contrasting threads.
