Description
Panama (Guna Yala), circa 1970s

Boldly composed reverse appliqué and applique mola panel featuring a radial quatrefoil design of four stylized leaf or plant forms arranged around a central axis, each lobe filled with serrated, comb-like interior elements and flanked by interlocking geometric filler motifs in the corners. Worked in three layers of orange, maroon, and turquoise cotton, with accent inlays of pink, magenta, green, yellow, blue, and white achieved through fine reverse appliqué windows. Executed with hand appliqué, reverse appliqué, and hand embroidery detailing throughout, with dense parallel running-stitch quilting defining the orange ground. Strong bilateral and radial symmetry with richly saturated color layering.
