Description

Panama (Guna Yala), circa 1960s
16 x 22 inches
Reverse appliqué and appliqué mola panel with hand embroidery, featuring a powerful spiritual composition with a central human figure displaying outstretched arms. The figure is flanked by stylized bird spirits with elaborate curved wings and detailed internal patterning. A small cross appears on the figure’s chest, suggesting syncretistic religious symbolism. The surrounding field is densely filled with interlocking geometric patterns, diamond shapes, and radiating lines creating a cosmic or celestial atmosphere. The background is animated throughout with multicolored dash patterns in yellow, blue, green, orange, and purple. Worked in three layers of cotton in burgundy, navy, and orange, with exceptionally fine hand-stitching and complex cutwork throughout the spiritual figures and geometric elements.
Provenance: From the Parker & Neal Collection.
