The Parker & Neal Mola Collection - Part 1
Lot 287:
Description
Panama (Guna Yala), circa 1970s
11 x 14.5 inches
Reverse appliqué and appliqué mola panel with hand embroidery, featuring eight large “S” spiral motifs arranged in a symmetrical grid pattern. Each spiral displays multiple concentric bands in alternating colors, creating dynamic visual movement across the composition. The spirals are framed by bright orange borders that connect and unify the design, while triangular elements accent the top and bottom borders. Small rectangular accent shapes fill the intersections between the major motifs. The color palette emphasizes brilliant contrasts with yellow, pink, green, blue, and orange against the charcoal middle layer. Worked in three layers of cotton in burgundy, orange, and black, with precise hand-stitching maintaining clean curved edges throughout the complex spiral forms.
Provenance: From the Parker & Neal Collection.
