Description
Panama (Guna Yala), circa 1970s

Boldly worked reverse appliqué, appliqué, and hand embroidery mola panel featuring a large stylized rooster as the central subject, rendered in densely stitched multicolor concentric outlines against a black inner ground set within a red field. The rooster’s comb is rendered as a lobed form covered in fine multicolor chevron embroidery, and the tail sweeps in a broad arc of layered curvilinear cutwork in black, yellow, blue, pink, and green. The feet are depicted as a symmetrical pair of webbed forms with multicolor dot-work fill. Two ship’s anchors, each finely embroidered on a black ground with orange outline, flank the composition in the lower corners — a characteristic Guna incorporation of maritime imagery. Executed in three layers of red, black, and green cotton, with extensive embroidered detailing throughout in yellow, blue, green, pink, and white. Retains original blouse border with pleated orange trim at bottom.
