The Parker & Neal Mola Collection - Part 1
Lot 223:
Description
Panama (Guna Yala), circa 1960s
15.5 x 19 inches
Finely worked reverse appliqué mola panel featuring five large spiraling scrolls, each rendered in a different color combination — yellow, pink, green, and yellow-orange — on vivid orange grounds. The spirals are separated by a central vertical axis with appliquéd geometric elements and flanked by smaller rectangular and rounded panels along the upper register. Executed in three layers of red and black cotton with extensive appliqué detailing in green, blue, yellow, pink, magenta, and lavender. Abundant dientes (triangular teeth) fill the channels between spiral bands throughout. Dense, even hand-stitching with strong compositional symmetry.
