Panama (Guna Yala), circa 1960s

Strikingly bold abstract mola panel on a dense black ground, worked entirely in flowing magenta reverse-appliqué channels that weave across the full surface in interlocking serpentine and labyrinthine forms. Embedded within the sinuous pink passages are numerous small stylized animals — quadrupeds, fish, and lizard-like creatures rendered in profile — each marked with a small yellow embroidered eye and filled with multicolor oval and dash embroidery in blue, green, teal, yellow, orange, white, red, and lavender. The overall composition divides loosely into two mirrored halves converging at the center, creating a dynamic visual rhythm across the panel. The tight, continuous pink channeling covers nearly every square inch of the black ground, leaving minimal negative space and demonstrating exceptional design density. The reverse shows a pink cotton backing with fine running-stitch construction outlining the composition throughout. Executed in two layers of black and magenta cotton, with extensive multicolor embroidered surface detail.
