Description

Panama (Guna Yala), circa 1970s
14 × 18 inches
Exuberantly worked reverse appliqué mola panel densely composed with multiple spread-wing thunderbird figures across two interlocking registers on a dark navy ground. Two large primary birds with rainbow-arc breast markings dominate the upper register — one rendered in blue and one in pink — each nested within a shared red and yellow sinuous outline. Three additional large thunderbirds fill the lower register in orange, pink, and yellow, similarly outlined in red and yellow. Smaller secondary birds occupy all four corners and the interstices, rendered in red and green, blue, teal, and purple. Every figure is internally detailed with concentric arc wing markings and embroidered dash fills. The densely worked background is covered throughout with vertical polychrome dash registers in the full spectrum. The upper edge carries a sawtooth border in orange and red. Executed in reverse appliqué, applied appliqué, and embroidery in black, red, orange, yellow, blue, green, pink, and purple cotton, in three layers.
Provenance: From the Parker & Neal Collection.
