Lot 72:
Description
Floretta Emma Warfel – Farmlife. 23″ x 24.5″ Signed with the initials F.E.W. and hand painted on blue fabric, this piece depicts a farmer in white hat and blue jeans starting the day in the farmyard. Farmhouse, barn, pond, tractor and a small animal make up the background, all under the rising sun. Born in Dushmore, PA in 1906, Floretta Emma Warfel began painting in her early sixties with the suggestion of a young neighbor. Using ballpoint tubes of paint and most often used cloth for canvas, she constructs colorful landscapes that are distorted and good humored. Mrs. Warfel’s paintings combine scenes from her native Pennsylvania, memories of farm life, and a vivid imagination. For further information see, N.F. Karlins “Floretta Emma Warfel: A Folk Artist in Embroidery Paint on Cloth”, Pennsylvania Folklife, Autumn, 1989.
