Description
Ethiopian Christian prayer or talismanic scroll and it is likely from the mid century. This scroll is written in the ancient Ge’ez language and it features prayers, excerpts from the Bible, and illustrations of Biblical figures and or scenes. The language, Ge’ez, is the liturgical language of the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church. The figure depicted at large is most like St George who is the patron saint of Ethiopia. The figure at the center of the crest on St George is most likely Emperor Haile Selassie who was a global figure for African independence and anticolonialism. He helped modernize the country and there are two shoulders at the bottom near the corners. The soldiers are in military attire with a lion with a crown. The piece was hand painted and so were the lettering on the scroll. IT is not in the best condition. There are several large and visible spots, discoloration, toning, fading, and other issues. It is on cotton and the piece itself is a wonderful reference for Ethiopian history and attitudes. It measures 38.5″x56″.
