Description

5 vintage Hungarian folk art embroidered table covers included, all worked on wool with traditional floral motifs characteristic of Hungarian folk embroidery traditions such as Matyó and Kalocsa. The first is a tan wool table cover with bold Matyó-style embroidery featuring large red poppies, purple tulips, pink and dark rose blooms, and blue accent flowers alongside green stems and leaves, with a red trim along the edges. It measures: Length: 23″ and Width: 17.5″. The second is a black wool table cover with a large central floral bouquet that includes a lavender flower, red roses, yellow and orange roses, magenta and red daisy-like blooms, small blue forget-me-nots, and delicate white and purple wildflowers, all on bright green stems, edged with a red crochet trim. It measures: Length: 22.5″ and Width: 17″. The third is a larger black wool rectangular table cover with a symmetrical Matyó floral design. A continuous floral border of alternating pink roses, red flowers, and green foliage with white dot accents frames all four sides, while the central field features mirrored pink roses with black spotted petals, a red tulip at center, yellow daisy-like blooms, and lavender bell flowers. The bottom edge is unfinished with fringe and visible red running stitches along the hem. It measures: Length: 21.5″ and Width: 15″. The fourth is a black wool table cover with red floral embroidery featuring red poppies and bell-shaped flowers on green leafy stems, with a scalloped red trim along the top edge. It measures: Length: 22″ and Width: 18.5″. The fifth is a square black wool table cover with a striking cutwork and appliqué design — white felt has been cut into stylized birds, doves, tulip shapes, and leaf forms and appliquéd onto the black wool ground, with green embroidered fern-like stems radiating from the center, four circular medallions with red and white geometric star-flower patterns, and a scalloped white felt border trimming all four edges. It measures: Length: 19″ and Width: 19″. The pieces are all in good condition; the third piece has an unfinished lower hem with visible fraying and running stitches. This was part of a NYC Archival Collection of Textiles for reproduction and inspiration purposes.
