Description
Panama (Guna Yala), circa 1970s

Boldly worked reverse appliqué mola panel depicting a central running horse within a multi-ringed medallion, surrounded by the inscription “LIONS INTERNATIONAL” in multicolored appliquéd lettering. Two stylized open-mouthed lion heads anchor the corners of the central field, with additional zoomorphic figures occupying the outer corners — an open beaked bird and a small animal figure above, another bird and a leaping creature below. The saturated red ground is densely filled throughout with polychrome dash registers. A multicolored Greek-key meander border runs the full width of the upper edge. Executed in reverse appliqué, applied appliqué, and embroidery in red, black, yellow, blue, green, pink, orange, and purple cotton, in three layers.
