Description

Panama (Guna Yala), circa 1970s

Finely worked reverse appliqué, appliqué, and embroidery mola panel featuring two large confronting crabs rendered in bold black and yellow outlines on a crimson ground, their bodies densely filled with a grid of multicolor cutwork squares in varied hues of orange, pink, blue, teal, purple, and yellow. The interlocking claws and curving legs create a dynamic bilateral composition across the full field. A small zoomorphic figure in cyan appliqué appears at upper center between the two creatures. Flanking grounds are animated throughout with multicolor embroidered stripe work and additional square motifs.
