Description

Panama (Guna Yala), circa 1970s
15.5 × 17.5 inches
Worked in two layers of black and orange cotton with extensive polychrome appliqué and hand embroidery throughout, this ambitious narrative mola depicts a commanding central spirit figure with arms raised, holding striped flags aloft in each hand. The figure is richly detailed with an embroidered face, beaded necklace, and a mola-patterned garment ornamented with stepped meanders, star rosettes, and wave motifs in multicolored thread. Flanking the central figure are two large spread wings or banners filled with dense multicolored dash fields and applied star elements. Four smaller attendant figures appear below, each carrying a rifle, rendered in appliquéd red cotton with outlines in yellow, blue, and olive. The field throughout is saturated with polychrome oval dash elements.
Provenance: From the Parker & Neal Collection.
