The Parker & Neal Mola Collection - Part 1
Lot 181:
Description
Panama (Guna Yala), circa 1970s
14 × 17.5 inches
Worked in three layers of black, red, and yellow cotton, this mola panel features a central stylized bird rendered in reverse appliqué with additional applied multicolored cotton elements and embroidered facial details. The bird’s body is ornamented with vertical polychrome striping, its head encircled by concentric arcs of blue, teal, orange, and purple, evoking a crested or plumed species. A dense labyrinthine ground of interlocking stepped meanders and spiral channels fills the panel, with a row of multicolored diamond appliqués forming a decorative border along the upper edge. Consistent hand-stitching throughout.
Provenance: From the Parker & Neal Collection.
