Description
Panama (Guna Yala), circa 1970s

Guna (Kuna) mola panel worked in three layers of red, black, and blue cotton with extensive polychrome appliqué and embroidery. The composition depicts two confronting figures identified by appliquéd lettering as “ADÁN” and “EVA,” each rendered with elaborately contoured multicolored hair executed in dense, concentric reverse-appliqué lines suggesting flowing locks. Both Adam and Eve raise one hand while holding an apple to their mouths. The upper register features a row of appliquéd rattle or paddle forms with cross-stitched circular heads, interspersed with multicolored triangle motifs that continue as a dense border on both vertical edges. Fully saturated composition with exceptionally fine, closely spaced running-stitch embroidery throughout the ground.
