The Parker & Neal Mola Collection - Part 1
Lot 116:
Description
Panama (Guna Yala), circa 1970s
14.75 x 17.75 inches
Worked in three layers of reverse appliqué with applied fabric accents and multicolored embroidery throughout. The composition centers on a symmetrical tree-of-life design with a strong vertical stem branching into multiple pairs of broad, veined leaves. Each leaf is individually detailed with polychrome embroidered veining in green, white, yellow, blue, red, and orange threads. Small triangular and teardrop-shaped appliqué inserts in pink, orange, and blue accent the spaces between leaves. The lower register features interlocking geometric maze forms with layered channels of green, yellow, pink, and purple. The upper border is filled with rows of vertical embroidered dashes in alternating colors. Executed on a red cotton ground with black, green, and tan layers revealed through the cutwork, black reverse. Dense hand-stitching throughout.
Provenance: From the Parker & Neal Collection.
