Description
Antique 1880s Cabinet Card Photo Album. This is an antique cabinet card photo album with photos dating from the 1880s to the 1890s. In total, there are 16 carte de vistes and 19 cabinet cards from photography houses primarily in Ohio with some in California, Michigan, and other states, These photos have a distinctive sepia tone to them which is a sign that the albumen print process was used to develop them. The photos of the subjects are mounted onto cardboard which is them slid inside their respective frames in the photo album to give different shapes. On the reverse of many of the cards, the photographer’s name and address are printed in large, ornate cursive. Men, women, and children are the subjects of the photos with the men and women looking off to the side while the children typically look directly into the camera. The photos are primarily solo shots from the mid torso up with a few that are full body photographs. The majority of the subjects are seated with the exception of a few and there are a few photos with two people photographed together. These photographs are mounted in a green velvet photo album with sterling silver buckles on the front with a monogrammed silver oval on the front. The bottom silver mount is missing its frame. A latch is on the side of the album to keep it securely shut. The inner spine is loose but the pages are still attached with there being frays present on the spine. The photographs show several age spots and fading. Some of the pages have tape, rips, age spots, and discoloration. The velvet has been matted in some areas with some spots and fading. There are also a few rips near the corners. There are several empty frames. This photo album is a wonderful resource for those interested in 19th century photography, fashion of the 1880s, archivists, or other general interests.
