Description
Vintage Bicentennial Quilt – Embroidered States measuring 65 by 102 inches. There is a 48 by 24″ area along the top with a hand embroidered map of the United States and the dates 1776 and 1976. Below it are 50 blocks, 9 1/2 by 6 1/2 inches, set straight, 5 by 10. Each block is a state block with the image of the state, capital location star, the State flower, the state bird, the date it entered into the union, and the number in which it entered into the union. There is a 3.5 inch red there is a 9 inch red white and blue strip be border along 3 sides of the quilt there is a thick batting and a white cotton reverse. The edge is finished knife edge style along the vertical sides and a twill tape edge has been applied by machine to the horizontal sides. It is machine pieced, hand embroidered, and hand tied with a button in the front at each block intersection. It is in good condition with a few small spots and discolorations. The pattern was published by Alice Brooks with Old Chelsea Station, and is also referred to as the State Educational Quilt. This quilt was published, page 6, in “Quilts Presidential and Patriotic” by Sue Reich, noted author, historian, and quilt appraiser.
