Description
Vintage Hand-Painted Eagle Bicentennial Quilt measuring 74 by 94 inches. Medallion style quilt with a 25 by 28 white center with a hand painted Eagle on a patriotic shield holding arrows and Laurel leaves with a red banner and “The Union and the Constitution Forever” and 13 stars below and the dates 1776 to 1976. It is surrounded with red, white, and blue rectangles, about 3 by 8 inches, arranged bargello style, also know as “Sherman’s March”. . There is a 3.5″ red border. It is hand pieced, hand painted, and hand quilted. There is a medium loft batting and a white cotton reverse. The edge is finished with and applied red bias tape binding, by hand. Workmanship is a little primitive, but the painting of the Eagle is wonderful. It is in good condition with just a few small discolorations. There is a sleeve on the back for hanging. This quilt was published, page 7, in “Quilts Presidential and Patriotic” by Sue Reich, noted author, historian, and quilt appraiser.
