Description
Antique 1847 Chimney Quilt Top, Finished 1930s based on the purple Depression Era print on the reverse. It measures 75×79″. It is comprised of 81 Chimney Sweep or Album blocks, About 8 by 8 inches, set straight, 9 by 9, with one inch off white vertical sashing. It is hand pieced and hand quilted, with thin cotton batting and purple print reverse. The edge is finished with an applied purple print binding, by hand. Several of the blocks are signed and dated in Inc. including Frannie E Jones Lansingburgh NY April 3, 1847, Friend Nancy Ann Morse, and Milo G Thompson Lansingburgh NY April 3, 1847. There are an additional 2 or 3 blocks with inked signatures or stamps. Fabrics include a nice variety of Prussian blue prints and chintz prints. It is in fair condition with toning, spots, and a few prints starting to deteriorate, specifically the to Turkey red prints. This quilt can be seen on page 99 of “Vintage Quilts” co-authored by Bobby Aug, though Bobbie interpreted the inked city as Hamburgh. From the Estate of Bobbie Aug. Bobbie Aug was a well known and regarded quilt historian, author, appraiser, and quilter for over a half a century. She was also an antique quilt dealer and quilt store co- owner and judge. Most notable is her work on the American Quilter’s Society Quilt Appraiser Certification Committee and her early involvement in the Professional Association of Appraisers-Quilted Textiles.
